Fairview Lodge # 339 A.F. & A.M.

Kings Mountain, North Carolina

Chartered on December 8th, 5874 A.L.

Fairview Lodge #339 was Chartered on December 8, 1874 with the following twenty named brethren as Charter Members as shown in the minutes book of December 8, 1874, presently in the Lodge Hall of Fairview #339 A.F. & A.M. of Kings Mountain, North Carolina. The Charter Members were Brothers: Isaac W. Garrett, H. E. Allison, John Berry, P.S. Baker, B.F. Dixon, Perry Dye, Freno Dilling, T.C. Ferguson, W.S. Goforth, W.H. Parham, R.S. Grigg, E.W. Tracy, B.R. Willeford, J.M. Whitesides, H.G. Logan, W.R. Shepard, P.E. Hines, William Froneberger and D.C. Beam.

The first Officers for Fairview Lodge #339 were Brothers: E.W. Garrett - Worshipful Master, B.F. Dixon - Senior Warden, Freno Dilling - Junior Warden, R.S. Suggs - Secretary, E.W. Tracy - Treasurer, W.L. Goforth - Senior Deacon, R.H. Garrett - Junior Deacon and Perry Dye - Tyler.
The first book of minutes was from August 25, 1874 through November 11, 1880 with loose pages for the year 1877. Records for the years 1881, 1885, 1890 and 1904 are missing.

Interesting minutes during the year of 1874 states in the By-Laws the joining fee as $1.00, for the 1st Degree $10.00, for the 2nd Degree $5.00 and $10.00 for the 3rd Degree, a total of $25.00 for the three degrees. The dues were $1.00 annually to be paid quarterly.
Interesting too were minutes of November 1, 1880 stating the Senior Warden preferred charges of habitual drunkenness, profanity and disorderly conduct against a Brother Mason, who attended the Centennial Celebration at the Kings Mountain Battleground. The Charges also state this subject had been drunk and disorderly before and since the date given in the charges and which causes great injury and embarrassment to Masonry.

The first lodge was opened as Hall of Fairview Lodge #339. The first minute book is well worn and dirty, has some faded pages and some parts are unreadable, although the Secretary of that time had beautiful handwriting. The first Secretary, Brother R.S. Suggs, served that office for 13 years.

The former Bible, dated the year 1897 and which was used at the Altar, is still in the Lodge, and is by A.J. Holman Co., 1222 Arch Street, Philadelphia, PA.

In June 1914, the Oxford singing class under directorship of L.W. Alterman visited Fairview Lodge of Kings Mountain, North Carolina. During their visit they stayed at the Mountain View Hotel, centrally located near the depot, both of which have been long removed in the 1930’s and 1940’s, the hotel being the latter. Misses Emma and Agnes Norris were proprietresses in 1914 and gave Brother W.P. Fulton a receipt in the amount of $37.00 written on stationary from Mountain View Hotel and which the lodge still holds just in case someone questions it being paid to date.It is noted the name of the Orphanage during 1918 was Oxford Orphanage Asylum and the then Superintendent as R.L. Brown.

During the year 1919, the records show the Program for the 14th Annual Session for the Grand Chapter of North Carolina, Order of the Eastern Star to be held June 11, 1919 at Southern Pines, North Carolina. Of course, Southern Pines being a winter resort, all of the hotels closed on May 1, but Southern Pine Hotel consented to re-open to accommodate the delegates to this Grand Chapter Session. The rates were $4.00 per day without bath and $5.00 per day with bath, the American Plan.

Although there was unrest going on in the world during the 1914’s, 1915’s, 1916’s and 1917’s and even though Congress passed a Selective Service Act in May of 1917 and registered all men between the ages of 21 and 30 and later changed this to age 18 and 45 drafting more than 4,000,000 men in the Armed Forces during an eighteen month period before the Armistice was signed, there were some who were fortunate in being able to remain home as shown on the minutes of the lodge in receiving the degrees in Masonry. For example, the year 1919 shows there were eight Initiated, Passed, and Raised.Times were hard during this period and earlier years when man had to work for a living by the sweat of the brow. As times changed for the better, fees were increased from $1.00 to up to $35.00 up through World War II. Dues were $1.25 annually up to $5.00 and later $10.00 through World War II. Since the 1946’s fees have gone from $35.00 to $50.00, in 1967 to $75.00 and in 1983 to $100. Dues in 1946 were $10.00, changed to $15.00 annually in 1967. During the years of depression in the 1920’s and early 1930’s dues and fees were changed to lower amounts and increased again as times were better. Fairview Lodge was in jeopardy of losing its’ Charter during this period of depression as many of the brethren were unable to pay dues at any price. The lodge was also hard pressed for a meeting place since they could not pay the rent. Out of the goodness of heart a deceased Brother’s Widow who owned the building and forgave the Masons for past due rent, they were able to stay on in the building. The minutes of November 6, 1920 signed by the then secretary Brother W.P. Fulton, show that a letter was received from Worshipful Brother William W. Wilson, Grand Secretary of the Grand Lodge of North Carolina for the annual returns of June 30, 1920 and $133.00 receipt for annual returns to the Grand Lodge. The returns listed six Initiated and Passed, and five Raised. There were two deaths, one demit and one reinstated during the year 1920.

The following officers were elected and installed in 1921, Brothers: L.M. Logan – Worshipful Master, G.H. McDaniel – Senior Warden, J.E. Lippford – Junior Warden, M.E. Herndon – Treasurer, W.P. Fulton – Secretary, M.A. Ware – Senior Deacon, S.A. Crouse – Junior Deacon, A.B. Falls – Senior Stewart, E.W. Neal – Junior Stewart and N.F. McGill – Tyler. On December 8, 1924, the brethren of Fairview Lodge voted to suspend a Brother for a period of twelve (12) months for having whiskey in his possession (Un-Masonic conduct).

For the year 1932, the Grand Lodge returns show 118 members for Fairview Lodge #339. The report also shows one Raised and three deaths. Fees for members were $50.00 and annual dues $5.00. Dues to the Grand Lodge were $1.25 per capita.

Times were hard for the brethren in 1933. Fairview Lodge #339 appealed to the brethren to pay up dues since the Lodge did not have sufficient funds to pay the annual grand Lodge Return dues. They were $222.00 past due and $100.00 past due in rent. As Of August 19, 1933, the members were behind $1200.00 in membership dues.

It was sad to see the Grand Lodge returns for 1934 showing a reduction in membership from 1933. During the year of 1934, there were only 83 members, down 35 members less than shown in 1932. There was one Raised, one reinstated and no deaths. The amount due the Grand Lodge was $2.50 per capita, $1.00 each Initiate and $10.00 charity fee per Initiate. Year 1934 fees for the degrees were raised to $35.00 and membership dues to $3.50 annually.

Records of the lodge show that on March 7, 1934, Rev. Creasy K. Procter was Superintendent of Oxford Orphanage and Ivery Allen, Treasurer. At this date, there were 375 children at the Orphanage. There was a singing class with L.W. Alderman - Traveling Manager, Mrs. Sadie Hutchinson – Directress, and Miss Nannie P. Bessent – Office Manager.Minutes for Fairview Lodge #339 reveal the following Resolution of Thanks, which reads: Mr. H.T. Fulton and Dr. L.P. Baker, Executors of the D.M. Baker Estate at a regular communication of Fairview Lodge #339, A.F. & A.M. of Kings Mountain, North Carolina and on August 2nd, 1943, we were instructed to express to the family of our deceased Brother, D.M. Baker (who held his membership in Fairview Lodge #339), our sincere and heartfelt thanks for his remembrance of the children of the Oxford Orphanage in his last will and testament in which he bequeathed to the Orphanage, ten shares of capital stock of the First National Bank of Kings Mountain, North Carolina. A copy of this note of thanks was to be sent to the Orphan’s Friend and Masonic Journal at Oxford, North Carolina. Signed by Brother J.E. Herndon – Master, Brother O.C. O’Farrell – Secretary.February 18, 1943 the brethren were on the move again and beginning to see more light when they moved into the W.K. Mauney building with a rental fee of $100.00 yearly, plus upkeep and repair of the building. The lease on this building was for 10 years. The first meeting was February 18, 1943 with Brother J.E. Herndon as Master of the Lodge and Brother O.C. O’Farrell – Secretary.Fairview Lodge #339 celebrated its 70th Anniversary on December 4, 1944. The lodge was chartered on December 8, 1874. The place of celebration was at the Kings Mountain Woman’s Club. For $1.00 per person, the meal consisted of ham and turkey, two vegetables, rolls, coffee or tea and dessert.March 4, 1946, Fairview Lodge requested and received notice from the Grand Lodge of North Carolina to change meeting time from the first Monday of each month to the second Monday of each month. The request was granted and to this date, the Lodge is still meeting the second Monday of each month for all regular or stated communications.

The minutes of March 10, 1947 show there were discussions of consolidation of Stateline Lodge #375 A.F. & A.M., Grover, North Carolina with Fairview Lodge #339, Kings Mountain, North Carolina. After investigation and some talking with Brother H.C. Wilson D.D.G.M., the idea was dropped and Stateline decided to continue on their own Charter.

On January 17, 1949, Fairview Lodge #339 celebrated its 75th year Anniversary at the High School Cafeteria. Rev. W.L. Presale, who was the Pastor of Central United Methodist Church, gave the Invocation. Dinner was prepared and served by Grace Methodist Church. Welcome by W. Kenneth Crook, P.M., and response was by Mrs. L.C. Pinnix, wife of Rev. L.C. Pinnix, Pastor of First Baptist Church of Kings Mountain, and who gave the Benediction. History of the Lodge was given by Brother John Floyd P.M. Brother Hackett C. Wilson, D.D.G.M. and resident of Shelby, North Carolina gave the introduction of Dr. Charles H. Pugh. Dr. Charles H. Pugh, Grand Steward, gave the introduction of the speaker. Dr. Maxwell E. Hoffman, Grand Master of Masons of North Carolina, gave the address. The Master of Ceremonies was Brother Arnold W. Kincaid, Worshipful Master of Fairview Lodge #339. Other officers during 1949 were Brothers: Arthur Walker – Senior Warden, Paul W. Owens – Junior Warden, Jake Keller – Treasurer, Paul W. Walker – Secretary, D.E. Tate – Senior Deacon, George White – Junior Deacon, Paul McGinnis & L.C. Pinnix – Stewards and J.A. Walker – Tyler. The revised by-laws for Fairview Lodge #339 were made up December 12, 1949 by Brother Paul W. Walker – Secretary. They were read for the first time on December 12, 1949 and were read and adopted on January 9, 1950. Most Worshipful Brother Charles B. Newcomb P.G.M. 1935 & P.G.S. 1945 who was then the Chairman of the Committee on by-laws at the Grand Lodge of A.F. & A.M. of North Carolina, praised Brother Walker on the fine manner in which he had put the by-laws together.October 30, 1964 was a great day in the history of Fairview Lodge #339 A.F. & A.M. of Kings Mountain, North Carolina. At a Stated Communication on that day the Brethren of the Lodge voted to accept the lot on Landing Street now known as Masonic Drive and which was donated to the Lodge by Neisler Brothers, Inc. The Brethren also voted to erect a new Masonic Temple at the cost of approximately $35,000.00. Construction was to begin as soon as the Grand Lodge of North Carolina could approve the plans. At that date the Lodge had $10, 000.00 in its treasury and was asking for $100.00 donations from the Brethren. With over $7,000.00 in pledges already in, they then voted to borrow $15, 000.00 from the Building and Loan. Since there were two Building and Loans in town at the time, the "Kings Mountain Savings and Loan" and the "Home Savings and Loan", it was decided that they should borrow $7,500.00 from each. These loans were paid in full on April 18, 1980. The Trustees during this transaction were Brothers J. Ralph Harrison – P.M. & C.L., Alex D. Owens and J. Lee Roberts.
